Peasants are the lowest part of the Feudal system and levels They work under the Vassals who in return provide them with land to work and live on An average peasant also called a serf or villien might work as a blacksmith in the fields or maybe as a woodcutter Peasants usually live together as a family or group They lived in small huts harvested their own food made their own clothes worked and on top of all that also gave most of their harvest and crops to the vassal or noble they worked for If the crops failed all of the food would go to the vassal and the peasants could have to survive on whatever food they had Peasants were often called tenants A tenant is someone who works and lives on land but does not own it They also pay rent to the landowner who allows them to use it The huts were in small villages not far from the fields Every day all members of the serf village would attend church There the pastors taught them that no matter what happened God loved them Most peasants continued to live life on only because of that for a serfs life is extremely hard and rough and except for the work uneventful Once in a while maybe for a large harvest or holiday all the serfs would gather up and attend a feast in town It was usually something to look forward to however the peasants often grieved about what they would bring for the kings family Every guest or serf who accepts the invitation must bring a gift for the kings family or new child Many peasants missed the opportunity because of the gift giving Serfs were never educated therefore they could never get a better paying job to support their families in town So a serf isnt the best occupation in the Middle Ages however for most it was the best
