For most of the fans sitting in the stands watching a Linn-Mar High School athletic event it would seem that sports here seem to be fair They would be wrong According to dictionarycom fair is free from bias dishonesty or injustice To me in sports fair means that everyone gets an equal chance of showing what they can do your last name should not mean anything and coaches should not have their self-interest at mind nor should they have favorite players As much as I would like to say that Linn-Mar sports happen in this fair manner they do not In fact it is almost the exact opposite There is a lack of fairness in Linn-Mar sports and it needs to be addressedDuring my four years of playing basketball here at Linn-Mar I have definitely witnessed some unfairness going around I noticed some of the injustice my freshmen and sophomore years and heard a few stories like certain players getting more playing time than they deserved because of their last name and the coaches had their favorite players Then my junior and senior year on varsity I really started to notice how fair sports could be I was not a starter my junior year but I did get my share of playing time The whole fairness factor did not get to me that much junior year but senior year it was much worse It was so bad to the point where I thought about quitting At the beginning of my senior year season I was told that I was not starting because I was such a spark off the bench At first I was excited and honored that my coach thought of me that way but some of the starters attitudes were getting unbearable Some of the starters were either always in a bad mood or they just did not want to be there I knew the coaches had to be able to see their
