The Chosen Literary Review By Chaim Potok Q What does Hasidism mean How is a Hasids life different from yours as a Christian 1Hasidism is a major sect of the Jewish religion In the Chosen the character Danny is a Hasidic Jew Hasidic Jews are very similar to other Jews Some similarities include that they celebrate the universal Jewish holidays and the Shabbat However Hasidic Jews have many unique qualities characteristics and Hasidic Jews follow a very strict code of appearance a black suit tie less shirt fringes ear locks beards and black hats Also Hasidic Jews follow the Torah literally unlike most Jews The family life of Hasidic Jews is also very unique The sons and daughters of Hasidic Jews are promised or married off when they are just small infant Some Hasidic children such as Danny are also raised in silence to strengthen their compassion The life of Hasid is different from my life as a Christian in many ways For example Christianity is a much more relaxed form of religion Also family life in a Christian family is also much different Christian Children are never promised or raised in silence because this goes against the rich family life involved in the Christian religion However the greatest difference between the life of a Hasid and a Christian is their belief of how God judges man which ultimately shapes their lives A Christian believes that God is merciful and will forgive anyone who confessed his or her sins However Hasids believe that God judges a man by the way that he follows the commandments Q How do Danny and Reuven change in the course of the novel How have you changed in the past year 2In the novel Danny and Reuven change drastically from enemies to friends The initial conflict between Danny and Reuven begins with the baseball game Danny and Reuven both of different Jewish back rounds look down on each other
