Stylistic Innovations In The Maltese Falcon The author of The Maltese Falcon uses stylistic innovations such as slang and excruciating detail regarding characters and scenery These are beneficial to the story because they add to the atmosphere of the story and aid in the visualization An example of the detail used is found on page 54 lines 20-28 The eagerness with which Brigid OShaughnessy welcomed Spade suggested that she had been not entirely sure of his coming She had put on a satin gown of the blue shade called Artoise that season with chalcedony shoulder-straps and her stockings and slippers were Artoise The red and cream sitting-room had been brought to order and livened with flowers in squat pottery vases of black and silver Three rough-barked logs burned in the fireplace Spade watched them burn while she put away his hat and coat An example of the slang used can be found on page 76 line 5 of the final paragraph supposed to have on him when he was bumped off It looked funny It can be argued that the use of slang and excessive detail are detrimental to the story but such arguments are made by the narrow-minded The Maltese Falcon is outstanding in its genre though would be found boring by those who dislike mystery novels The extreme detail lends to the story a realism not found in other novels in that it allows an almost perfect picture to be formed in the readers mind it seems clear that Hammett wanted all his readers to imagine exactly the same scenes and circumstances Also the sheer amount of detail leaves the reader an excellent opportunity to pick out important fragments for him or herself thus adding the chance to do some slight detective work The slang adds a dimension of colloquialism to the story immersing the reader further in the story and adding yet more depth to the already well-rounded characters
