Losing Control Significant incidents can alter a persons best judgment and cause him to act out of the ordinary An incident such as this happens to Sammy in John Updikes short story AP Working at a grocery store Sammy is always ready for a little excitement Due to the striking appearance of three half dressed girls Sammy changes physically mentally and emotionally Like any teenage boy Sammy allowed his hormones to get the best of him He described the appearance of the first girl in a remarkable manner Sammy said She was a chunky kid with a good tan and a sweet broad soft-looking can with those two crescents of white just under it Updike 824 Sammy then noticed the tall girl that he explained as ordinary but he went into full depth to explain He said she was the type of girl other girls thought were pretty but never made it Queenie was the goddess of the three Sammy made an analogy comparing Queenies chest to ice cream They were the two smoothest scoops of vanilla I had ever known were there Updike 827 Sammy physically seems to lust over the girls Sammys mind had been distracted so much that he could not perform his job He stood there with a box of crackers in his hand and could not remember if he had rang it up or not The customer in line had to get his attention because he rung an item up twice Sammy could not keep his mind on anything except the girls He was devoted to everything going on around him but the task he was trying to perform at the register He realizes that he is in the third checkout slot with his back turned to the door so he does not see them until they are over by the bread Sammy was not mentally able to accomplish anything during that time Because he was so involved with these
