Todays prison system is extremely overcrowded in fact its more populated today than it has ever been This puts stress on prison staff and administrators as well as causing safety concerns and hazardous health conditions for offenders In 2004 there were more than two million offenders incarcerated in the United States There is effort put forth with probation and parole and prison administrators to help reduce prison population Probation and parole is set up to supervise the offender and keep them on the right track Prison administrators keep control of offenders so they can successfully reintegrate back into society Every correctional facility in the United States has a system instilled in their organization which helps them control prison population by classifying each inmate according to criminal history age status gang affiliation and much more It is also important to utilize a well-trained and efficient staff but with the excessive population its hard to keep all administrators safe which is why there are so many issues within the prison system Overcrowded prisons in the United States is creating safety hazards for administration and staff as well as putting the entire personnel as a health risk I would like to elaborate a little on how the prison system is operated Administrators today go by a system within the prison to help manage its population It is often referred to as prison capacity This is a general tool used to help understand how much room and beds are available for occupancy There are four main components of this system The first module is bed then staffing patterns physical plant and designated use With bed count being the least important of the four components it varies from day to day When offenders are transferred to prisons for incarceration this process can take up to two or three days between institutions
