MuniingMy mention of muniing to anyone beyond the unicycle community is invariably succeeded by a blank stare What is muniing And then Why would anyone want to go mountain unicycling So the conversation goes Mountain unicycling affectionately referred to as muniing is to be fair an extreme activity Traversing narrow slopes covered in rocks roots and dips while on one wheel is not inherently easy Successfully navigating said slopes though makes it more than worthwhile it makes endorphins and adrenaline flood my system cheering me on as I say to myself I got this It makes me want to touch the tree branches on either side of me and record the moment and go again and again Muniing is truly one of the most amazing things in the worldBut do you fall they ask me Sure I fall a lot But who wouldnt when mountain unicycling When trying to jump over a log for the first second third fiftieth time When only able to see that rock nestled in the underbrush after tripping over it Falling is part of the experience That is not to say that I dont wear a helmet wrist guards shin guards and knee pads whenever I peddle off onto a trail but nothing amazing can be felt without a little risk When I first started muniing I thought I wouldnt be able to do it because I didnt have good enough balance Now that I can muni well enough to successfully jump over logs cross over rickety narrow bridges land after a steep drop - at least the majority of the time - I know that yes balance is a fundamental part of it but that it can be practiced and refined It takes time to learn to balance but its that amazing feeling at the end that makes it worthwhile It takes focus to balance something that really makes me love muniing I cant think about my
