Waking up delusional and unfamiliar with my surroundings was only trivial in comparison to the needles injected into my forearm I was completely exhausted and reality was a blur I had spent three weeks in a hospital while my mom cried her eyes out at my bedside I was four years old and diagnosed with bacterial meningitisUpon arriving home I was carried from the car to the couch Although I was recovering from a dazed state I did not understand why I could not have walked myself however I soon realized my legs were useless Unable to fathom why they did not move on command I figured my tomfoolery days were over As time progressed my legs slowly began functioning and who was I to not take full advantage of it I ran around for hours working up quite a sweat and troubling my mother along the way After fully recovering I was about to reach a major milestone in my life elementary school On the first day of school I was raging with excitement With my new backpack strapped on I walked with confidence and breathed only the air of success What I thought would be the most exciting six years of my life took a turn for the worse The majority of my classmates breezed through each subject and while attempting to keep up I inevitably trailed behind I could not read so I attended special reading classes Math and science baffled me and my handwriting was barely legible looking as if all the letters on the page decided to crash into each other I had lost all hope and nothing could compensate for my inability to learn My mom later informed me that the meningitis I had when I was four greatly affected the development of my brain While those who survive meningitis run the risk of being mentally retarded deaf or prone to frequent seizures I was comforted with the thought
