Epistemologists have long argued that knowledge is situated within particular social locations In other words what we know is shaped by those factors that have formed our identities Differently said it is through personal lived experience that we each come to know the world and how it works Understanding social location as yielding distinct and particular knowledge is a good starting point for my decision to pursue a doctoral degree Curiously from a very early age I knew what directions to take in life I gained consciousness about my surroundings and this awareness helped to shape my thinking and notion of life I grew up with my grandparents in a challenging family setting which taught me to compete early and to use my initiatives Growing up I was solely responsible for my adventures It became clear to me early what I would not want be even if I had no inkling of what I was to become One thing was certain I knew the road to follow This may come as a surprise but before age ten I was convinced I was not cut-out for politics or business Making sense of a young boys choice of a profession may perceptively be incomprehensible but looking back today there is indication that the knowledge my grandparents shared with me were meant to encourage me to study The important thing is it worked Once I was introduced to schooling I loved it and saw it as a pathway to the diminution of poverty Again this may explain why I returned to college many years after I received a masters degree After two years of college education in Nigeria I came to the United States in 1980 as a transferred student I enjoyed a smooth steady progress finished my bachelors degree in record time and advanced to a masters degree programin Public administration By the time I was finishing my masters degree program in 1985 I had
