Delayed gratification is the philosophy of postponing satisfying my desires In a commentary author Fareed Zakaria said of East Asia countries all of which have grown miraculously over the last 40 years that the key ingredient has been an ability to invest for the future rather than consume in the present Delayed gratification causes personal growth but isnt an easy task Many of my most painful memories originate from moments of delayed gratification I laid awake on my bed the whole night with my phone expecting something anything An hour ago I spoke with Riley my boyfriend who became my ex-boyfriend After two years of a relationship we broke up The feelings of being unwanted worthless and unimportant invaded my emotions Before we broke up I believed Riley wouldve reassured me that the problems we faced were temporary and fixable but like a confused little boy he gave up Leaving Riley would mean giving up the cold autumn nights under football lights his warm jacket and the bond we shared With him I felt there wasnt a situation I needed to figure out I thought I knew the answer to everything I released all those feelings I had for Riley to stand alone and wait for someone new Ive grown and accepted that I am just a teenager who doesnt know the answer to everything I have just begun learning Country musician Taylor Swift reminds young women through her music that In life youll do things greater than dating the boy on the football team but we I didnt know it at fifteen From this experience Ive grown as a woman and realize that boys come and go but through this heartbreak I found the strong woman inside of me with huge dreams for my future Delayed gratification isnt a simple philosophy to live by but it allows personal growth Saying goodbye to Riley broke my heart but from my experience of delayed gratification
