When I begun to explore my career options I was working on a research project with DrNoyek an otolaryngologist at Mount Sinai hospital I enjoyed watching surgeries and attending grand rounds while shadowing him Despite the difficulties in his own life which I had learned about later he frequently displayed positive professional values by going the extra mile in placing his patients needs first taking care to cheer them up and maintain a positive attitude while paying close attention to changes in their conditions His commitment to patient care was evident in the organizations that he had founded and the amount of personal time that he devoted The doctor frequently went out of his way to ensure that the appointments were a joyful occasion making jokes and taking time to care that the patients laugh during the procedure while carefully tending to various medical conditions I recall a specific instance when a newly-wed patient was going on a honeymoon in the coming months and the doctor independently realized and suggested that by moving a few appointments he would be able to provide the surgery earlier leaving ample time for a full recovery prior to the honeymoon In this way looking out for the patients best interests The doctor frequently stayed behind taking time from his personal schedule to obtain the latests updates on this young mans results in order to assist him in proceeding with the surgery He went above and beyond the job requirements for this patient ensuring quick communication with hospital staff when results came in and post-surgery in monitoring the recovery closely to ensure it was on track PRESPECTIVESInitially I viewed the doctors attitude very positively he effortlessly displayed sincere compassion and devotion towards his patients I recognize now that I could have simply viewed this as him fulfilling the requirements of his job However DrNoyek went above and beyond his job description ensuring the patients felt cared for by planning out
