I was born five weeks prematurely by cesarian section to an Indianmother and an IrishFrench father in a predominantly white suburb Ifasked my father would say I was small enough to fit in the palm of hishand my mother would say that I came with a full head of hair and myclose friends would say I came out wearing a pair of boots I am neverwithout a pair of boots on The house that they bought together is thehome that I still reside in today My parents divorced after my third birthday and my father moved tothe town of Redhook in upstate New York With visitation only twice amonth the lack of day to day contact and clashing personalitiesdistanced me with my dad At age seven my mother remarried to a funloving Jewish Dentist from Philadelphia My stepdad who belonged to awhole family of dentists encouraged studying valued intelligence andsupported all of my hobbies At age nine my sister was born and webecame a family Growing up I was criticized by both children and adultsfor my skin color my parents divorce my parents interracialmarriage my sister only being a half sister my not being a Christianmy stepdad being Jewish and my mother and her family being immigrantsHowever I learned to embrace the things that made me different andlaugh off the things that people saidThe real bombshell was when mymother was diagnosed with breast cancer and we thought she was handedher death sentence Those words could not simply be laughed offLuckily she remained calm did her research and found excellentdoctors She is still in remission but not without her physical andemotional scars I was inspired by the fact that she never gave up andcontinued life as usual at work and home during her treatment At the age of nine the area was redistricted because a new elementaryschool was built Children were taken from different zones and placed inthe brand new school which had new books
