I really didnt want to go there Peering out the airplane window Isaw nothing but a few brightly lit buildings in the darkness A voice onthe loudspeaker announced that wed be arriving in just a few shortminutes Id been sitting in that seat for over fourteen hours and Ifelt relieved that Id be getting up soon Well this was it We were nowarriving to this mysterious land that my parents once called home Thiscountry that was infamous for its suicide bombings poverty and corruptgovernment A country that Id be living in for the next fourteen daysFrom the second I stepped outside of the airport I knew that Pakistanwasnt anything like New York The buildings were littered withgraffiti the roads were overwhelmed with garbage and the streets werecrawling with beggars Meeting all of my new family was actually niceIt is interesting to meet people who are so different and yet so similarto you But the pleasure of meeting new family wasnt enough to make melike Karachi In fact I was starting to hate the city Not only did Ihave to shower with a bucket but I had to venture the streets on adaily basis Creepy beggars occupied every street and every corner Itbroke my heart to see that so many people had absolutely nothing Therewere so many people that didnt even know where theyd be getting theirnext meal from The worst part was that half of these beggars werechildrenOne day while in Karachi I visited the mall and something happenedthat I will never forget A poor young boy asked my mother for money Mymother gave him one hundred rupees which is about one dollar The boygave us the biggest smile and walked away I didnt think much of itbut when we were leaving the mall we found the same boy sitting outsidewaiting for us And he had brought about ten boys with him The boy wehad seen before screamed Thats them and they all started tocharge
