I took a trip up to the Marion County Museum of History and Archeology The museum is fairly small and located in the middle of Ocala Although the museum is small from the outside it is filled with several really interesting artifacts The main focus in the museum is to share artifacts that are only found in Marion County so people that live there can enjoy some history about their city The museum has six different sections The first room starts from over 10000 years ago This room is filled with over hundreds of arrow heads You got to learn how to tell the difference about which arrow heads were used for tools skinning animals and hunting In the first room also there were old mammoth ribs they had to be over three foot long In the second room is one of them that I found most interesting It was filled with st johns pottery This is an artifact that I was the most interested in The primary trait that is common throughout the area both within its heartland and along its varied borders is the distinctive St Johns pottery Outside the heartland however along the borders the distribution of St Johns pottery decreases and it often becomes a minority ware or changes in technological attributes says wwwflheritagecomfactsreportscontextswwwecflpdf About 3000 years ago is when the Indians started making pottery The Groups of Indians were getting larger and they were staying in place for longer The stamps pieces of pottery had different designs on them They gave clues to how old the camp is and who was tribe was residing in the camp There were two main Indian groups that lived in Marion county the Deptford Indians mostly lived on the gulf coast but traveled to Marion county for hunting so we find small quantities of their pottery On the other hand the museum had several pieces
