In ethics narrative theories propose principle or principles for distinguishing right actions from wrong actions Two broad categories of ethical theories exist These theories can for convenience be divided into consequential teleological principals or on non-consequential deontological Consequential principles judge ethics of a particular action by the consequences of that action Consequential Ethics therefore determine the rights and the wrongness of any action by determining the ratio of good to evil that a given action whole produce Non-consequential principles tend to focus on the concept of duty rather than on any concepts of right andor wrong Under the non-consequential approach a person acts ethically if that person is faith full to his or her duty regardless of the consequences that may follow Egoism and utilitarianism are two consequentiality theories that are not always applicable in my workplace I work for a state agency Department of Welfare where as a case worker employees participate in classroom and on-the-job training to learn Department of Public Welfare procedures for determining if applicants meet the eligibility requirements for public assistance programs They learn the requirements for programs such as Medical Assistance Food Stamps and Temporary Assistance to Needy Families Employees also interview persons applying for public assistance programs establish and maintain with the client an Agreement of Mutual Responsibility help clients identify and remove barriers to financial self-sufficiency determine the assistance programs for which applicants qualify and make referrals for appropriate services This job is performed in many offices through out the state of Pennsylvania there is no deviation the in the work policies and procedures Under consequential both theories agree that rightness and wrongness are solely a function of an actions result Usually by an individuals own self interest Non-consequential principles seem to be more apparent in my office and due to the fact that I work for a state agency where guidelines for set forth at a higher level state and have internal checks and
