Nice Guys Finish Last Nice guys finish last as the old saying goes It might have come from Niccol Machiavelli As many people could tell from his attitude he thought you should be feared not loved Not necessarily cold hearted and mean but make people know who you are and respect what you do Machiavelli thought that the most important thing was your army As he said A prince must lay strong foundations otherwise he is bound to come to grief Which in my opinion he means that your foundation needs to be the central part of your economy such as your army Without your army built strong you wont go very far If your armry isnt strong it will cause your people a lot of pain worrying and grief Machiavelli doesnt agree with hiring mercenaries His reason for this is that the mercenaries have no other passions of incentives to hold the field except there desire for a little money and even that is not enough to make them die for you I think that is a very valid point You either have someone fighting for you that doesnt really care about your land or you have your people fighting for something that belongs to them and that means so much There own personal possessions family and there life Machiavelli is also saying that a prince should not study or be worried with anything other than war It may seem a little extreme but a war can be the huge down fall of an empire Machiavelli thinks that war is so important that it keeps born princes in place and will also raise a private citizen to princely fortune On the other hand it is clear that when princes have thought more about the refinements of life than about war they have lost there positions says Machiavelli Machiavelli goes through the principals of being a good ruler The most important one is
