Obesity is a growing problem in the United States According to theCenter for Disease Control CDC more than one -third of the USApopulation is obese Overweight obesity is defined as havingabnormal or excessive fat accumulation that may impair health WorldHealth Organization Between the 90s through 2010 there has been adramatic increase in obesity in the United States CDC Obesity isa complex issue that cant be blamed or caused by one factor Obesityalso contributes to many adverse health issues Obesity and being overweight are associated with many health risks Someexamples are heart disease high blood pressure type 2 diabetescancer breathing problems stroke pregnancy complications as well associal and psychological issues We are not just worried about how aperson looks but it is starting to take a toll on a persons body andmind and even society as a whole According to the CDC in the 2008Medical costs associated with obesity were estimated at 147 billion themedical cost for people who are obese were 1429 higher than those ofnormal weight Also according to the a 2005 CDC report someone who is40 overweight is twice as likely to die prematurely as someone with ahealthy weight This data just supports the fact that obesity not onlyeffects an individual but every member of societyThe many adverse effects of being overweight or obese however what arethe causes of obesity There is not just one reason for a person beingobese Obesity can be caused by a medical condition like a hormonalimbalance thyroid problems or side effects from medication Also someindividuals maybe genetically more likely to become obese because theyhave family that are obese These are things that a person does not havecontrol over national heart lung and blood instituteI believe that the main reasons that contribute to our high obesityrates are things that people can control like our lifestyle andenvironment Many Americans HYPERLINK calendarT5today today livea very inactive lifestyle We do not make the best
