Ronald Regan was born on February 6 1911 in Tampico Illinois His father John Regan was a shoe salesman His mother Nelle Regan was a person of strong religious beliefs who spent much of her life doing charity work for neighbors He had and older brother Neil who was born in 1908 There was a picture that was taken when he was one year old that showed him as a fat baby his father thought he looked like a fat little Dutchman so Ronald got the nickname Dutch While they were living in Tampico there family lived in a cramped apartment over a general store His family had little money His father was an alcoholic but when he was not drinking he would work hard and provide for his family His father will begin drinking without any warning and stay drunk for a week or two at a time The outcome of his drinking led him to lose good jobs and fell behind on paying bills While this was happening he never stopped trying to take care of his wife and kids He would travel town to town searching for jobs When he worked he tried to support them as much as he can Ronald would say I suppose we were poor but we never knew we were poor His brother Neil would remember sharing one bed with Ronald going to the butcher shop to ask for ten-cent soup bone and for liver for a cat that the family did not have For their big Sunday meals they would always eat fried liver for the rest of the week they would eat soup bone When Ronald was nine his family moved to Dixon he finished elementary school in Dixon and graduated from Northside High School Because of this he will always call Dixon his hometown Ronald was not a
