Party welcomes NBA back to city By MARY FOSTER AP Sports Writer October 30 2002 NEW ORLEANS AP -- Twenty-three years after it was dumped by the NBA basketball returned to New Orleans Naturally the city threw a party A shindig complete with fortune tellers face painters dancers bands and a standing room only crowd preceded Wednesday nights game between the Hornets and the Utah Jazz -- the team that abandoned New Orleans in 1979 Who would have thought several years ago that the NBA would be back in the land of gumbo and red beans and rice said mayor Ray Nagin who declared Wednesday Teal Day in honor of the team We want to thank you for your confidence in allowing the NBA to come back to our city The Hornets move from Charlotte NC to New Orleans was an unlikely one NBA commissioner David Stern admitted before Wednesdays game Stern said he and others in the league believed Hornets owners George Shinn and Ray Wooldridge were simply using New Orleans as negotiating ploy when they first mentioned a move to the city There was complete skepticism that this wasnt anything other than Ray and George having no place else to go Stern said And it turned out they did in fact have other places to go but they said New Orleans The street outside the arena was closed for several blocks for a Halloween party Mock cemeteries were set up including one with a tomb labeled Future Grave Site of the Utah Jazz Rockin Dopsie Jr and the Zydeco Twisters played as families strolled through the area many in Halloween costumes The Hornets took the court for warmups to a standing ovation from the 18500 people in the sold-out arena I never thought Id see this day said
