Conflicts have been part of our society for thousands of years and have been very different in nature Only recently have we been concerned with intervening with conflicts through a term we have coined as peacekeeping Peacekeeping operations or humanitarian interventions as we know them have been around since the end of World War Two and the creation of the United Nations in 1945 Since the fall of the Soviet Union peacekeeping operations have changed and have now a completely different approach to intervention than during the Cold War But to what extent has peacekeeping evolved since the end of the Cold War Do these changes make peace operations more or less likely to Succeed We will first look at the pre-Cold War era and how humanitarian intervention was organized what their objectives were and how involved they got with conflicts We will then look at the transition to a new world era after the fall of the Soviet Union how peacekeeping operations have changed in nature as well as the change in the nature of the conflicts We will follow up with some case studies of the UN intervention in Somalia and Bosnia Finally we will take a closer look at some of the difficulties that peacekeeping operations have encountered and the different methods that can improve operations looking at the Libya in 2011 as a final case studyWith two predominant powers seeking to destroy one another on the political scene during the Cold War peacekeeping operations and humanitarian interventions were not regarded as top priority issues by the five permanent states of the United Nations Security Council There are three main reasons behind the lack of concern for peacekeeping operations during the Cold War the first being the fact that both the USA and the USSR concentrated all their military potential towards building an arsenal both nuclear and conventional to deter one another from starting a nuclear holocaust These two superpowers did however
