This is a carefully crafted text Salinger adopts the persona language and speech patterns of a west coast American teenager Some aspects of the text create the impression that the speech is spontaneous and disorganized Holden Caulfield repeats himself he gets side tracked about his brother and divulging pretty personal stuff about his parents and he doubles back on himself about his brother in Hollywood mentioning it halfway through the text DB my brother Hes in Hollywood and then again at the end now hes out in Hollywood being a prostitute Of course him brother is not actually a prostitute he is a writer writing screen plays but Holden chooses to see it as working for the establishment and prostituting his words This piece is coherent and Holdens train of thought is easily seen but it does not have the fluidity that most pieces of text have but the writer has specifically crafted it to be like this It sounds as if Holden is speaking to the reader This is because of the very effective use of the first person narration style Holden talks directly to us and tells us about his own experiences thoughts and feelings The tone of voice that Holden uses to reveal the characters and events in the story will show us what his attitude is to these characters or events For example he could be compassionate sympathetic understanding critical impartial and so on in different situations Often the Holden tries to explain why other characters in the novel think feel and act as they do It is important to remember that his explanations are influenced by the his own personality thoughts and feelings His opinions need to be carefully examined before accepting them as reliable and truthful He obviously has a very slanted view of his parents His descriptions of them put them in a dim tyrannical role my parents would probably have about two hemorrhages apiece if I told
