As a child I would have never imagined that I would be studying abroad I grew up in a country that attending college or an university was not the subject you heard of the most so it was a subject that I did not know about until my family and I migrated to the United States my whole life change a 360 degree change School was one of the things that completely change for me school here is nothing like it is in my hometown back in Mexico I was 11 years old when we arrived so I attended 6th grade During the first couple of years I didnt have a clue on what was going on and always had to depend on somebody to translate for me and help me with my work Although there was always other students that could translate for me I was not sure there where telling me exactly what was being said making me an easy target to be pick on As I pass through middle school I stared to learn English and the whole new concept of school with a lot of work and help from teachers I manage to make my way to high school Once in high school things stared to change I understood more and could communicate a bit more And it was then when I heard teachers and other students talk about college and I didnt had a single clue about it Thankfully my sophomore year I was available to join in a UNC Chapel Hill program call SLI Scholar Latino Initiative in which this program was design to help Latino students who had passing grades and a GPA of 3 or up to attend and prepare you for college Once you were accepted in the program you would be assign a mentor who also was a sophomore in college in which both the mentor and student would go along with the next three
