Personal privacy in a social media era is becoming much more difficult to maintain This concern with privacy can have both positive and negative implications For some individuals being socially available is acceptable encouraged and required for their professions However for most of the public at large this type of social availability can have a negative impact on their lives Social media sites should be held more responsible to privacy concerns in the communities they have created Awareness to privacy or the lack of privacy should be of great concern to all users of this technology The ability to share information with a large audience can be a powerful tool for many up and coming businesses Social media sites can put a face on a new a company with little or no cost This type publicity can be spread rapidly and almost virally through social media communities an effect that was very difficult to achieve just a few years ago However when it comes to an individual being publicly available it can lead to many problems within their lives For example identity thieves can use any information made available on social media sites to commit crimes against the individual their family or their friends Social media sites have the power to confront most of the privacy issues with this technology However it appears that the concern for privacy is counterproductive to most social media sites goals Part of a social media sites business model is to make your information available to as many people as possible while still maintaining your privacy requirements Implementing a community which is inherently private could cost social media sites a great deal in terms of profits So it is really left to the users of this technology to educate themselves and insure their lives are maintained as private as they would see fit
