Jean Piaget one of the famous psychology scientists researched on the changes that occurs in children mental abilities as they grow up and discovered that children pass through different stages as they develop These changes are referred to as cognitive development Shaffer et al 2010 These four stages he identified includes the sensorimotor stage the preoperational stage the concrete operational stage the formal operational stage According to piaget a child has to pass through all this stages accordingly and as the child moves from one stage to another their intelligence and level of functioning increases The process that enables them to pass through one stage to the other are assimilation accommodation which are the forms of adaptation Wade et al2010 He also discussed about the cognitive structure how children arrange and interpret their experience and knowledge Shaffer et al2010 The sensorimotor stage it is the first stage a child must pass through and it occurs between birth to year 2 of their life At this stage infant begin to assimilate and accommodate reflex action and this occur between birth to a month old At age 1-12 month infant begin to develop different motor habit and schemes They begin to repeat the habit and schemes for the sake of fun They begin to develop ways of solving little problems and do not have object permanence till 1- 2 years of age Lastly infant begin to copy or imitate actions or behavior of people around them The second stage preoperational stage occurs between age two to seven At the stage the child use of language and symbols increases Children lack the use of dual representation at the early stages of preoperational but improve as they grow older According to Piaget children of this stage are animism which means they always attribute or refer the qualities of living things to inanimate object and they
