Mitchell GangwishAshley FosterEnglish 205October 05 2013 Emotions unlockedPicassos famous painting entitled Guernica depicts the extreme human emotions at the time of a catastrophic event of war Pablo Picassos 1937 painting was in response to the heinous attacks on the demilitarized town of Guernica by Spanish nationalists and German condor pilots This bombing raid left the Basque area in complete ruins and killed many innocent civilians This black and white painting displays a dark mood and many raw or untamed emotions that are the consequences of such actionsPicasso used only black white and grey in his painting In doing this he sets a dark mood The lack of color draws the eye to the white images in the painting These white images are all the faces of the suffering humans This emphasizes the hopelessness and despair of the humans portrayed The male who is essentially the centerpiece of the picture is a prime example of this His head is tilted back mouth is wide open and teeth barred which shows the raw emotion of having no hope The lack of detail with his body draws focus to his face giving attention to these raw emotionsGuernica from a viewers first glance you see random depictions of human suffering and tragedy Every persons face in the painting is giving off a horrified facial expression For example the woman on the top right of the painting is shown throwing his hands up in the air and looking up in a painful manner I believe Picasso wanted to show the viewer that the woman is experiencing physical pain from the fireexplosions of war Another example is the women on the top left under the bull
