No person in the United States shall on the basis of sex be excluded from participation in be denied the benefits of or be subject to discrimination under any educational program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance According to Title IX of the Educational Amendments of 1972 to the 1964 Civil Rights Act people of both genders should be given equal opportunities to participate in any educational activity Laws have been made that support Title IX and it may be written into school handbooks but is this law correctly put into effect everywhere Unfortunately the answer is no There are still places that discriminate based on sex This is a detriment to our society as a whole Title IX should be duly implemented in all educational institutions to provide a sense of fairness and equality between both genders and to help the fight against discrimination Title IX mandates that schools cannot deny any student the right to participate in any educational program based on their gender While many schools adhere to the official requirements of Title IX women and girls are not necessarily granted the equality that Title IX is meant to provide Why is that Teachers and other administrative figures still hold remnants of the pre-Title IX days Although classes such as woodshop and auto mechanics are open to all students there is still a strong lack of female participation in these classes Disinterest and apathy may be reasons but could fear of criticism and bias be others Technically the law is being followedbut not in the way that it is meant to be This causes major gender equity issues that need to be addressed These issues are highly related to the benefits of properly enforcing Title IX and include gender bias in studentteacher interaction gender differences in learning styles and girls at risk of dropping ou t of school If Title IX is properly enforced the negative aspects of these issues can be
