In the novel Frankenstein Mary Shelleys female characters are weak beings who allow males to be the dominant figures who control them Elizabeth Lavanza proves to embody the role of a submissive female through her lack of self-confidence and courage to stand up towards Victor Frankenstein In addition Justine Moritz illustrates the traits of a weak female through her inability to stand up against her mother Similarly characters Elizabeth and Justine also demonstrate the role of a submissive being by allowing male characters to control their actions and to dominate them Elizabeth living in a family of males is forced to take on the stereotypical role of a female in the house while Justine confesses a lie because a male priest pressures her to Therefore in Mary Shelleys novel both Elizabeth Lavanza and Justine Moritz prove that women are weak through their lack of self-confidence and courage which allows men to dominate themIn Frankenstein women are portrayed weak characters through their lack of self-confidence and inability to act courageous An example of womens lack of self-confidence in the novel is through the character of Elizabeth Lavanza Victor goes up to Elizabeth and tells her about a secret that will greatly affect her but will only reveal it after their marriage Victor tells Elizabeth I have one secret Elizabeth a dreadful one when revealed to you it will chill your frame with horrorI will confide this tale of misery and terror to you the day of our marriage Shelley 180 After Victor tells Elizabeth about an important secret that he has and the fact that he will not reveal it until after their marriage Elizabeth does not question him or do anything to try to discover what secret is The secret as Victor says is dreadful but Elizabeth does not do anything about it with the fact that the secret could have an affect on her This portrays Elizabeths lack self-confidence and courage towards her
