Its Pride vs Gridlock as City Looks to Olympics New York was selected as Americas entry in the global competition to hold the 2012 Summer Olympics and the selection was greeted with pride and joy from city and state officials the towns movers and shakers and ordinary people taking a stroll in the park Many New Yorkers expected the selection to bring huge revenues from tourists a boom for business in the city and thousands of new jobs to construct the necessary facilities New transportation lines new housing in a big Olympic village in Queens at the end of the Olympics and momentum for a city recovering from the September 11th terrorist attacks It is impossible to bring an Olympics to New York that would bring tons of money without experiencing traffic As James Molinaro the Staten Island borough president quoted Everybody wants to go to heaven but nobody wants to die Basically he is saying that traffic tie-ups and other inconveniences would be well worth the trouble Random New Yorkers were interviewed throughout the city to get their take on bringing the Olympics to the city in 2012 Many of which loved the idea and saw the big picture of the Olympics being the main concern not the traffic or the five-dollar hot dogs Most felt it would bring many tourists back to the city and the building of the stadium would bring about lots of construction jobs and new business where everybody would make money Mayor Michael Bloomberg said that New York City needed most of the planned improvements anyway and that he was not going to wait for 2012 to begin constructing Governor George Pataki believed that the state the city and private donors would raise the necessary billions He also took great pride in the committees confidence in selecting New York over San Fransico saying how it shows the rest of the world that New York is
