According to Interpretations of Dreams Sigmund Freud the founder of the Psychoanalytic approach to psychology believed that nothing one does occurs by chance every action and thought is motivated by our unconscious at some level In order to live in a civilized society we have a tendency to hold back our urges and repress our impulses However these urges and impulses must be released in some way they have a way of coming to the surface in disguised forms One way these urges and impulses are released is through our dreams Because the content of the unconscious may be extremely disturbing or harmful Freud believes that the unconscious expresses itself in a symbolic language The dream images represent the unconscious wishes or thought disguised through symbolization and other distorting mechanisms From this he concluded that a dream is the conscious expression of an unconscious fantasy or wish unfulfilled in waking life According to Freud every dream represents a wish fulfillment Dreams are representative of the imaginary fulfillment of a wish or impulse in early childhood before such wishes have been repressedIn everyday media we are bombarded with imagery of variety of sorts from new model cars with all the bells and whistles cars to perfume ads with people living the in the lap of luxury these are things we may have dreamt about or desired For instance in order to sell a product advertisers will exploit the consumers most personal feelings and use our wish fulfillment to make us buy their products The ad for Kelloggs Special K cereal is selling a wish fulfillment for they are using a fairytale fantasy to appeal to the sub conscious emotions of women and using advertising tricks to make them believe that eating this cereal will equal happiness power and a slim waist lineIn the recent May issue of Redbook magazine an ad for Kelloggs Special K cereal has found has its way into the center page
