Sin is one step back one step away from the positive life we aresupposed to lead But sin is inevitable in our lives We can control ourreactions and actions to the repercussions of the sin These reactionscan do four separate things end in a worse position in the sameposition in the the previous position or in a better position than thesin caused The first option is a reaction that can cause another stepbackwards The second leaves the sinner in a position no worse thanwhat the sin already put them in The third and fourth options leavethe sinner in a better situation as the third acts as retribution forthe sin But in the fourth and final option the sinners choices leadto a better overall outcome than what is expected from the sin In theScarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne the fourth option is displayedby the creation of Pearl this creation signifies hope We revel in thishope that good can come from sin but this can only happen if the sinnerchooses to take the harder but more rewarding path Hawthorne usesPearl to reflect the other characters and their relationships whiledetailing her in a mystical tone This combined with the irony in hername all work simultaneously to demonstrate that good can come from sinif the sinner takes the proper actions Pearls situation in The Scarlet Letter proves to be paradoxical in thesense that she is the disease and yet also the cure When Hawthornefirst introduces Pearl Hawthorne describes her with shame Hawthorne44 as Hawthorne describes the two to coexist with one another Thisshame represents a desire for repentance in regards to the adultery Yetas the infant and shame are coupled but not put under the same titlePearl represents the part of the adultery sin that is not regretted byHester and Dimmesdale Hesters outburst She is my happiness- she ismy torture none the less Pearl keeps me here in life Pearl punishesme too See ye not she is the scarlet
