"I really like the quotation you've chosen about how strong the mother is--it helps guide your reader to see how your summary emphasizes those themes. You've titled this paper "Summary" and "Response," so I have assumed that part of the assignment is to summarize the essay in detail. However, if you do not have explicit instructions to summarize in detail, I found this summary to be on the long side--normally, the analysis (in this case, the "Response") should be given more space than the summary. You bring up some really interesting points on your second page, where the response starts. I was curious if you had more thoughts on why Smith-Yackel uses so many numbers. Your point about keeping the reader informed makes senses, but might there be other reasons--pathos, ethos? More generally, I think you could dig deeper into some of your reactions--you've identified some interesting points, and I think your reader would want to hear more. (Do you think there was another reason why she called, as you bring up in your final paragraph? Is she grieving?) My final comment is to make sure to proofread. There were a number of minor errors that should be addressed to ensure the reader has a distraction-free reading experience."
