As we all know the Pueblo Revolt occurred in 1680 and it was an event were indigenous tribes of the New Mexico area came together to revolt against the Spanish government and for a few years successfully managed to revive their old customs and their old religious beliefs before the Spanish government re-conquered them once again and put an end to their ways of life The question that has historians pondering is not what occurred during the revolt the real question is what caused the pueblo revolt This question is not a very difficult one to answer right of the bat the first thing that comes to mind is that the Pueblo Indians were suffering suppression from the Spaniards they must have been treated bad and thus they revolted against the upper class However the answer to this question is not that simple it has a very complex answer that even today it is not yet clear After doing some of the readings by different authors the answer to this question is still in the air However the idea of the cause is clearer now than before the readings Basically there are two main camps to the answer of the question what caused the pueblo revolt There are those who argue that Pueblo Indian and Spaniards developed a mutually beneficial relationship before exterior forces tore them apart in the 1660s and 1670s and those who see a long standing antagonistic relationship made worse by the events of the 1600s and 1670s Q3 p128 In the readings there are clearly those who fall under the first category and those who fall in the second category inclusively there are authors that fall in between Van Hastings Garner is the author of the third essay where he disagrees with the belief that Religion was the main cause of the Pueblo revolt He falls under the category where there is a belief that Pueblos and Spaniards had a mutual
