As an African American mother of four children I am constantlychallenging them on issues of race and culture Racial inequality andinjustice are not landscaped in their mind because of the era they wereborn into My oldest daughter Ivory has a friend in high school who isCuban Her father is Cuban while her mother is Cuban with AfricanAmerican ancestry Ivory states that the father does not like Blackpeople based on an experience he had with two black males These blackmen robbed him therefore all black people are criminals and thieves andnot worthy of his trust He instilled in his children that you hatepeople based on the color of their skin not on their merit of theircharacter The only true connection that my daughter and their familyhave in common is their religious beliefs My daughter finds it acceptable to spend time at her friends housewhile the father is following her around to make sure she does not stealanything She even states her friend has made racist statements aboutAfrican American males I question my daughter on why it is acceptablefor her to allow someone to say derogatory statements about race or beblatant about their prejudices about African Americans That to me is asubliminal message that is sent to Ivory in which should reflect howthey feel about her as well My hope is that Ivory can learn toadvocate for herself and others who are subjected to prejudices andracism based on outward appearance Not only does the dominant culturerepress minorities but often times different subordinate groups becomeeach others oppressor Members of my family as well as the African American community aresocialized early in life to have a strong commitment to family Thesefamily dynamics have always been essential to our ethnic group just asit was for prior generations The word family expands beyond biologicalrelatives it also includes people we have formed kinship bonds withsuch as
