Religion affected the Puritans during every day life in many ways In fact Puritan religion dominated their lives at its strongest point in every aspect This domination includes there clothing jobs homes education and also their literature In one hostile and frightening writing Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God an author scripts The devil is waiting for them and hell is gaping for them Edwards the author is trying to convey the idea that while all people sin and think that no one is paying attention the devil is watching The devil is waiting to drag them all to hell for eternity If the religion of the Puritans was not so strict and pessimistic the message that you must take strides to avoid the devil may have been conveyed in a more gentle and encouraging way Another quote from the same piece O sinner consider what danger you are in Says clearly that trouble is around every corner at all times Edwards is attempting to tell the people not to be ignorant to the danger of the repercussions of their sins He believes that every one is in danger of going to hell and there is nothing that they can do to change it Because of Puritan religion he believes that God is the only thing that will save them all from their sins And finally a last example Men are held in Gods hand over the fiery pit of hell they deserve the fiery pit This means simply all men are sinner Edwards is reiterating that the only thing keeping the Puritans every human from going to hell is God Not the persons goodness love or faith but God himself He is also implying that everyone goes to hell Basically Edwards religion has every influence over his beliefs therefore have every influence over his writing The belief that every man is a sinner and their destiny is
