Religious Freedom and the Puritans By Jen Owen The word Puritan is defined as a number of Protestant groups that beginning about 1560 wanted to purify the Church of England Literature 5th edition 9 Not much is to be known about this group of people who came to the New World in search of religious freedom However through all the illnesss deaths Indian raids brisk winters and famine this group of people somehow roughed it and made it through everything The Puritans were a simple group of people who were very brave when they took a long voyage across the Atlantic Ocean in search of a place to call their home A place where the religion was not forbidden Many Puritans suffered persecution in England Some were whipped put into jail or even murdered Literature 5th edition 9 Puritans were practical and businesslike and were very single-minded visionaries convinced of the rightness of their beliefs Literature 5th edition 9 The Puritans believed that God sent his only son Jesus Christ to save particular people and the rest of the people were dammed to hell The Puritans also believed that people should enter freely into agreements concerning their government The Mayflower Compact was the first try at a form of government in the New World All of the passengers upon the boats agreed on the rules included in the compact The views tended to be undemocratic for the people and the compact did not go as planned Over all the Puritans were a simple group of people who just wanted to practice their beliefs in peace The American dream for me would have to be to have world peace and not war live a long healthy life and to watch my children grow up and succeed in life John F Kennedy As stated above the ultimate American dream changes from person to person For me the dream would consist of
