Rene Descartes is considered to be one of the most influential figures in the philosophical analysis of the world around us Reading through the pages of Meditations of First Philosophy one thing becomes clear Descartes use of language leads him to misinterpret his ideas in a number of places Throughout the meditations Descartes leads himself into many false ideas through the misuse and misunderstanding of language as he attempts to represent his thoughts and ideas with language that confuses him The idea that he may be wrong about everything if his founding opinions are wrong leads Descartes to set aside all the opinions which I had previously accepted He strives to take this same approach with what he can accept as truth anything that can determined without a shred of doubt to it In separating everything he cant know as completely true from his mind which he determines is the only thing he can hold as real he gives identity to everything from his memory to his eyes Evidence of this occurs from the very beginning He states that I have learned by experience that these senses sometimes mislead me and it is prudent never to trust wholly those things which have once deceived us Here he treats the senses as if they were some foreign creatures which deceive him It would appear his interpretation of misinterpretations is that something has somehow lied to him Moreover if he is to throw out all previous opinions of what cannot be proven without any doubt as he sees it he must also rule out his opinion that his senses has mislead him Throughout the reading Descartes struggles to follow his initial plan and to correctly analyze what is real and what is not In his question of consciousness he further misuses language leading him to falsely analyze his ideas He states It seems apparent to me now that I am not looking at
