Autism Spectrum Disorders ASD are cognitive and neurobehavioral disorders having three core features deficits in socialization deficits in verbal and nonverbal communication and restricted and repetitive patterns of behaviors Rahman 2010 Furthermore to understand this disorder one must first know that there are many forms of autism As stated autism is a spectrum of disorders that include Childhood autism Aspergers syndrome childhood disintegrative disorder Retts syndrome and pervasive developmental disorders not otherwise specified Rahman 2010 ASD symptoms are evident in a childs early stages of life Consequently parents are usually the first to notice their child may have a problem Moreover every child is unique in his or her own way However some signs remain the same Hence signs may include failure to make eye contact not responding to their name when called and repetitive behavior Moreover some do not acknowledge another persons presence in the room For example when called by their name it is almost as if they were in a different world and cannot hear anyone calling them In addition during interaction they fail to show any emotion For example they do not smile or make any overjoyed facial expressions In some cases the aforementioned signs can be seen before a child turns one year of age Parents are advised to communicate these behaviors with their childs primary pediatrician The pediatrician will ask a series of questions to determine if the child is not at the expected developmental stage for his or her age Once a problem is noted the child will be referred to a child psychologist for further research After the psychologist determines if in fact the child has ASD he or she can request the proper treatment for the child Fortunately with so many advances in the medical field we are now able to approach the subject with a better understanding In researching this topic I expect to enhance my knowledge on the aforementioned a subject Furthermore this
