Child abuse is one of the most common forms of physical maltreatment exercised among society today Investigations by CPS agencies in all states determine that close to a million children are victims of child maltreatment every year Child abuse is the key reason why children are becoming more emotionally and mentally unstable Many people may define child abuse as beating your children or sexually abusing them but there stands many other forms of child abuse The United states department of health and human services considers 4 categories of abuse neglect physical abuse sexual abuse and emotional abuse Strickland 113Physical the most prominent usually goes hand in hand with verbal abuse and takes place at the hands of parents Physical abuse constitutes as the non-accidental infliction of physical injury to a child Neglect is also defined under child abuse which is the failure to satisfy the childs basic needs such as food shelter and TLC Sexual abuse is defined as any activity with a child before the age of legal consent that is for an adult or a significantly older child Lastly emotional maltreatment which is defined as the ignoring isolation criticizing terrorizing or rejection of a child Children abused emotionally at any age are at risk of depression panic disorder memory problems Sleep disorders eating disorders anxiety disorders and suicide attempts Frey 184 One study reported that 80 percent of sample of young adults who had been emotionally abused as children had developed one or more psychiatric disorder by age twenty Frey 184When a case of child abuse is suspected or reported an investigation is immediately conducted Once the investigation is conducted the law enforcement agency determines whether the evidence backs up the case From there if a child is suspected to be in danger law enforcement officials may take the child and place them in an orphanage or a temporary foster home until the parents show their willingness
