Im in a boisterous crowd There is a blur of swirling dresses The bleeting blaring sound of horns replaces the swirling splash of colors as men in formal but silly bolero jackets float past Old fashioned cars carrying Mayor Castro along with members of the Texas Cavaliers and the Daughters of the American Republic sit alongside prominent Mexican nationals and descendants of the Battle of the AlamoThe little man in the Paleta cart pedals by with a group of parched kids all waving dollar bills trailing behind him Rey Feo the Ugly King walks by zigzagging across the road throwing fiesta medals and beaded necklaces into the crowds A parade float follows the ugly king in sharp contrast with a finished beauty riding atop the float She dawns an extravagant beaded gown with a 25 foot train that a nimble handed old lady spent many hundreds of hours beading over the last yearAs she waves regally to her subjects she tugs at her beaded gown to reveal tennis shoes All of my senses are engaged and over stimulated I cant decide where to focus my gaze and my attentions shift continually The sights the sounds the smell the heat all feed a building sense of sustained peakSuddenly an unanticipated stimulation of something breaking over my head occurs I look left I look right I fell and see colorful confetti and shattered shells falling before my eyes I touch my head half expecting to find blood on my hands but there is none I look around to see if other people are experiencing a similar horror but everyone is laughing and enjoying being surprised As part of Mexican Tradition the hallowed out chicken eggs are dyed and filled with colorful confetti to be smashed over the head of fellow revelers Little does everyone know that although Mexican culture embraces the cascarones as their own the little eggs actually came from China Just like everything else
