AWAKENING OF THE UNITED STATES All throughout the war people havent heard from US In fact what US actually did during the war was a big question Did US just allow a global conflict to happen without helping to settle the disputes Even before the war began US had enacted laws designed to prevent American involvement in the war The US had severely impaired its ability to act against aggression by passing a neutrality law that prohibited material assistance to all parties in foreign conflicts Although US did not formally join the war up until the Pearl Harbor bombing US was involved in different ways Although the US refrained from intervention US played a big role during World War II For example US President Franklin Roosevelt was convinced that Germanys invasion and expansion put American security in danger He strongly believed that France and Great Britain could not stop Hitlers plan and attack without the help of US Because of this United States aided the British by giving 50 old American naval destroyers in return for the right to maintain American bases in Newfoundland Bermuda and the British West Indies Roosevelt also set a program called cash-and-carry policy in which Great Britain could borrow money for their supplies Because of this policy the British enabled to import US food and armaments They paid cash and transported the goods in their own ships This allowed the United States to supply the British without risking the loss of American neutrality US tried to help other countries for the benefit of US society The US abandoned strict neutrality in the European war and approached a confrontation with Japan in Asia and the Pacific Ocean In March 1941 the US Congress passed the Lend-Lease Act and appropriated an initial 7 billion to lend or lease weapons and other aid to any countries the president might designate By this means the US hoped to ensure victory over the Axis
