James H Cromer 31401 English 175 Science Fiction 1 Genre Define Science Fiction The Merriam Webster Dictionary defines science fiction as fiction dealing principally with the impact of actual or imagined science on society or individuals 467 I think this definition is simple yet grasps the main idea of the genre The field of science fiction is ever changing Technological advancements and advancements in society cause the genre to react and step up to the next level giving a glimpse of what the future might be or a glance of what the present or past would be like if history hadnt played out as it did Science fiction can also be used as a platform to warn readers of what could happen if society continues to behave the way that they currently do A wild tale of technology and human interactions can all become believable when there is a little bit of scientific fact to connect them The seed of science fiction was planted in the second half of the 19th century with works by HG Wells and Jules Verne Many believe the first science fiction novel is Mary Shelleys Frankenstein but the first time the words science and fiction were put together was in 1926 by Hugo Gernsback Gernsback published a collection of stories called Amazing Stories where the stories were based more on factual science He coined the term Scientifiction to describe the genre The publication was a hit and many spin-offs were born Authors around the world started writing scientifiction and began to mold the genre into what we know today as science fiction Science fiction can be split into two sub-genres hard and soft Hard science fiction relies heavily on science either real science or a science witch is established in the story Soft science fiction deals mostly with human sciences and doesnt completely rely on the science to explain the story Some soft science fiction is difficult to
