It was after the United States victory in World War II over imperial Japan and Nazi Germany that Americans had something new to worry about A highly publicized Soviet Union domination throughout Eastern Europe caused the political consciences of the United States to shift its attention to possible threats to national homeland security To further procrastinate these fears a publicity-driven Wisconsin senator created a new era in American society labeled the Era of McCarthyism During this time Senator McCarthy labeled many high-profile politicians as being communists to constantly rouse the fear and compromise security in the free land known as the United States in the late 1940s and 50s In a famous speech to the Womens Club of Wheeling West Virginia in 1950 Senator McCarthy delivers a shocking and scandalous rhetorical dialogue discussing the current situation involving the United States and the Soviet Union and outs many prestigious politicians as communists in the process When a great democracy is destroyed it will not be because of enemies from without but rather because of enemies within This statement in Senator McCarthys opening oration not only questioned the integrity and honor of important government personnel but instilled a personal fear in the lives of American citizens In this remark he is referring to a potentially large number of sleeper cell communists residing within the United States that present an everyday threat to national security by having high-profile positions in the US government To solidify his point he remarks One thing to remember in discussing Communists in our government is that we are not dealing with spies who get thirty pieces of silver to steal the blueprints of a new weapon We are dealing with a far more sinister type of activity because it permits the enemy to guide and shape our policy What better a way to capture the attention of United States citizens everywhere than by posing a danger to the way their everyday lives are
