For my job shadow I decided to oversee Laura Cleary who is a social worker I originally wanted to job shadow either a psychologist or a psychiatrist but with patient privacy concerns and other issues choosing social work seemed much more realistic After discussing whether I would be allowed to join them Mrs Cleary and I decided that I would be shadowing her girls group at 230 pm The group was for students from Schaghticoke Middle School which was nice because they would not be too young She told me about two meetings one which would be at the Maxx on Bank street and the other at the Youth Agency on East street I decided to attend both this way I could ensure I had enough time to experience the groupOn my first visit at the Maxx a recreational building for grades 6th to 12th I was already familiar with the surroundings One of the girls was celebrating her birthday and a small cake was being served when I arrived Although it was not as professional as most medical environments it made social work appealing The fact that the meetings did not have to be in an office meant the occupation was flexible and much more casual On my second visit at the Youth Agency building the room was very colorful and covered in childrens chalk drawings Another one of the girls was celebrating her birthday and brought cupcakes for her friends Although on both days I came were birthdays I doubt it was a constant recurrence The fact that they could bring food or celebrate which is probably unlikely in other workplaces was really sweet In both of my experiences there was no real special equipment used but Laura used an object like a stone as a Talking Piece The Talking Piece helped the group take turns talking during the discussion At
