In 1940 the Selective Training and Service Act was signed into lawThis Act mandated compulsory military service for men between the agesof 18 and 25 in times of need This would be accomplished through adraft or conscription which would allow the military to mobilize alarge force in a short time The draft was in effect from 1948 until theend of the Vietnam War in 1973 at which time became an all-volunteermilitary This created a huge divide among US citizens as many wereopposed to the war and infuriated they would be forced into combatwithout having a say in the matter Forcing unwilling young men tofight kill and take the risk of loosing their own lives strips them oftheir freedom of choice and is just plain wrong Others would argue thatthe draft was necessary and if one wanted to enjoy the freedom offeredby their country they needed to be willing to fight for that freedomMany of those drafted were against the war and did not have the propertraining to go into combat This lack of training and resistanceincreased the likelihood that mistakes would be made Of the 1728344men who were drafted in the Vietnam War 17725 lost their lives Therest would be physically andor mentally scarred for life These menwere someones son brother father and were ripped away from theirloved ones to fight in a war they did not believe in Having a soldierwho is a willing participant tends to stay in the service longer andreceive more training making them more proficient Those that weredrafted did not have the dedication or training needed to make a goodsoldier The loss of life from the draft alone created unnecessaryhardship on thousands of families who were forced to move on withouttheir loved ones and in some cases the bread-winner of the familyWhen a person if forced to participate in something they are notcommitted to or trained for properly they do not perform effectivelyThe Vietnam War divided our country
