Theres an old joke that goes something like Where do you hide a welfare recipients check where hell never find it Under his work boots This joke recapitulates the concept of this essay which is should welfare be changed into workfare considering the fact that there are many who take advantage of the welfare system I believe welfare should be changed to workfare because it possesses many benefits Workfare enables those under the workfare program to find employment and workfare is good for the community and environment Another benefit is that workfare creates an independent citizen no longer relying on the government for financial aid Lastly workfare is beneficial to our economy First off welfare is a social program intended to provide financial needs to those who are disadvantaged The modern welfare system dates back to the 1930s when the Great Depression left many out of work and two-thirds of the population would be considered poor by todays standards Franklin D Roosevelt the president of the United States at the time implemented a social program in order to help the needy However welfare has come a long way from now and has arguably become a system that feeds money to those who are too indolent when its original purpose was to help those in need to get back on their feet On the other hand workfare is a government-controlled program intended to put able-bodied recipients to work in exchange for their welfare benefits According to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario Works a workfare program implemented in Ontario handicapped elderly injured full time students and single parents with young children will be excluded from mandatory workfare These are the key concepts that will be discussed throughout the essay The first main advantage workfare has is that workfare recruits receive the experience and tools necessary for them to find an employment which in turn is good for the community and environment While a person is
