An Internet Browser is an application program that provides a way to look and interact with all the information on the World Wide Web The basic functions of the browser are to make requests of web server throughout the Internet on behalf of the user and display the information on the computer screen It acts as an interface into the web doing whatever is necessary to carry out user requests Internet browser also offers a convenient way to interact with a variety of Internet functions including telnet sites gopher sites and ftp sites There are two major browsers on the market today They are Netscape Communicator and Internet Explorer These two browsers have similarities and differences IE4 and Communicator have converged in many areas Both incorporate NNTP newsreaders and POP3- and IMAP4-compliant HTML-aware e-mail clients rudimentary Web-page editors push delivery systems and various live-collaboration tools Both have vastly improved interfaces with flexible toolbars extensive drag-and-drop support automatic URL completion and richer control over attributes such as security Both support automatic software updates a welcome addition for products that go through incremental version updates and security patches Despite similarities in their products the two companies are taking different paths in their attempts to dominate the browser market With IE Microsoft has effectively merged the Web browser and the operating system An integral component of the Windows shell IE is now the browser for both local and Web content The traditional desktop wallpaper turns into an active desktop that can host miniature Web pages and Internet-related tasks mesh with the Start menu These shell integration features will be the most prominent change in Windows 98 Windows ME Windows 2000 and soon Windows XP previously code-named Whistler In Netscapes vision the browser suite is not simply a tool for navigating the Web but the client side of an enterprise-wide cross-platform architecture for exchanging information both within a company and outside it Communicator
