In this study I investigate the social interactions and language use of people in bible study groups The study specifically examines the bible study sessions that take place in a Protestant church after regular Sunday services I focus on analyzing how participants conducted the conversations and how this conduct is restricted and elaborated in this specific setting The study further provides an insight to how people interact differently in religious organizations compared to ordinary situations Due to the nature of the setting the participants talk about philosophical and religious subjects in addition to everyday topics As these topics can be very sensitive matters they are careful in presenting their thoughts and avoid conflicting ideas Along with such constraints in the interactions participants show cooperation in achieving a common goal of learning The members of the group take turns when expressing their opinions The members stay attentive to leaders words while the leaders listen to every opinion mediate any differing ideas and lead the discussion to achieve mutual learning atmosphere Upon analysis of the interactions this study shows how such constraints and cooperation are demonstrated throughout the session With the definition of institutional talk from literature review I argue that conversation during bible study sessions are a form of institutional talk In a big picture this study contributes to applied linguistics field by providing additional data to researches on institutional talk Even though a lot of studies were done on institutional talks the primary focus has been social interactions of people in work places By looking at religious settings this fieldwork report offers a new perspective to the study of institutional talks Literature ReviewInstitutional talk is defined as forms of interactions that usually occur in specialized environments where the participants are limited and restricted by institution-specific goals Institutional talk can be distinguished from ordinary conversations through three particular features 1 The participants are in specific goal orientations that are tied to their
