Understanding social problems through theories and findings help us deal with our lives and understand society Everyday the newspaper is filled with stories on social conditions such as crime violence and environment Because these are facts they are generally not too arguable This aspect of society can be viewed without bias Subjectivity however refers to making judgments based on personal feelings and opinion It is really easy to make wrong assumptions because of another person or event that has occurred Are all homeless people drunks Of course not Social imagination is a tool talked about in the book that is used to step outside of subjectivity and look at the big picture The definition of social problems is always changing History and cultural values play roles in defining social problems Things that mattered once before in society dont or at least not as much today Slavery was the norm at one time where today it is obviously viewed differently Values are the standards a societys culture determines what is good bad right or wrong The social issues throughout history on which multiple interests and different values have come to bear is difficult Issues of civil rights or equal education opportunity of the right to choice vs the right to life and of criminal justice Awareness to issues like these allow for social movements These social movements can then lead to change It is awareness that also defines what social problems are because of bringing the problem or issue into the public eye It can take a long time for change to comeSocietys idea of race and identity has too changed There are still issues and problems throughout the races however Sometimes social institutions end up supporting racial inequality by accident Institutional discrimination is to maintain the advantage for the dominant group while appearing to be
