During a difficult time have you ever asked why me Do you feel like you are the only one facing a problem I have Surprisingly this is not true we are so wrapped up in our own problems as individuals that we are unable to relate our problems as being part of a greater picture society Society is defined as a large group that shares three characteristics geographic areas culture dominance and expectations and are governed by the same political authority In order to understand and correlate the effects of human behavior as individuals and group life vice versa sociologist studied society by the use of theoretical perspectives and research methods Early sociologist developed four theoretical perspectives functionalist conflict symbolic and postmodern Not only do these perspectives help in understanding how our individual lives and problems are in fact part of society but we can analyze how everything fits together thru sociological imagination Sociological imagination is the correlation between personal problems and public issues A public issue that intertwines with per sonal problems is unemployment The unemployment rate had increased substantially back in 2008 and what was the reason The housing market meltdown brought on by the subprime mortgage crisisBefore moving on let me further explain what the previously mentioned theoretical perspectives are The functionalist perspective is the idea that everyone as an individual or institution family government economic etc makes a contribution to society which if successful will result in an orderly and stable society However if one of its membersinstitutions malfunctions everyone will be affected not only as individuals but as an institution and society will be unstable The conflict perspective is the constant battle between groups over power and limited resources The symbolic perspective main focus is on smaller society groups it analyzes how individuals perceive symbolic language that is facial gestures tone of voice etc from the interaction with others Last but not least according to postmodern perspectives society has
