Spina bifida is a neural tube birth defect when the spine does not form correctly Some of the vertebrae in the spine does not close all the way leaving an opening There are three main types of spina bifida spina bifida occulta meningocele and myelomeningocele Spina bifida occulta is the most common form and usually does not have any symptoms or treatment Most people dont even know that they have it until they get tested for it Kugler Meningocele is a little more severe and the opening is slightly bigger Fluid leaks out of the opening and pushes against the skin creating a bulge and there are usually no other symptoms Spina Myelomeningocele is the most severe form In this case some of the spinal cord sticks out of the opening The nerves are often damaged and this leads to problems walking bladder control and coordination Spina Anyone is capable of getting spina bifida All women capable of becoming pregnant are at risk of having a child born with spina bifida About 1 in 1000 newborns in the US have it and about 90 to 95 percent of newborns families have no history of it About Each year in the US 4000 pregnancies are affected by spina bifida While there are not symptoms while a woman is pregnant the first symptoms appear after birth If mild some symptoms include a dimple birthmark or hairy patch over the defect In mildly severe cases there is a fluid filled area and in the most severe cases tissues and nerves from the spinal cord may be exposed on
